Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian
Federation
The annual International Symposium on Nanostructures is chaired by two Nobel Prize
laureates Professor Zh. Alferov
and Professor L. Esaki, and traditionally organized by Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute of the RAS,
which is pioneering in many directions of this impetuously developing area.
The Symposium was launched in 1993 by its Co-Chairs. It was one of the first in the area,
which now is becoming one of the leading in modern physics and technology.
The 16th Symposium will be organized together with the Institute for Automation and Control Processes of
Far Eastern Branch of the RAS in Vladivostok from 13 to 19 July 2008.
Vladivostok is the biggest city in the Russian Far East.
It has nice and original architecture, lot of scientific, educational and cultural centers.
July in Vladivostok is one of the best months.
The weather is warm enough, without exhausting heat and humidity.
One of the excellent qualities of the Sea bays around Vladivostok is their geographical position:
on one side they are protected by the Black Mountains, on the other side by the peninsula and the continent.
So, high waves do not enter the bays, and at leisure one can practice swimming and boating,
which are among the most ancient human arts.
The forest around Vladivostok is very rich and impressive.
There are a lot of different mushrooms and berries, including famous Chisandra chinensis,
wild apples, grapes and strawberries.
The aim of this Symposium is to focus on the newest achievements in physics,
technology and applications of solid state nanostructures and bring together various groups working actively
in these very important directions all over the world.
The Symposium scientific program will cover a wide spectrum of physical phenomena,
both basic and applied, and technological aspects related to nanostructures.
The forthcoming Symposium will be held in Vladivostok from 13 to 19 July 2008.
Symposium venue is the Building of Administration of Primorsky Region located in the downtown of Vladivostok.
Vladivostok is worldwide famous for its scientific, technological and education facilities.
Also among its benefits is the beauty of Far Eastern nature.

The symposium programme will cover different aspects of semiconductor nanostructure
research. We are seeking for contributions in the following, non-exhastive list of topics:
- Technology of Nanostructures: Growth, Self-Organization and Nanopatterning
- Atomic-scale Characterization of Nanostructures
- Electrical and Optical Properties of Nanostructures (including Spin-related Phenomena, Many Particle Effects,
Infrared and THz Phenomena)
- Nanostructure Device Applications in Opto-Ultrafast Electronics and Computing
- Nanophotonics, Microcavity and Photonic Crystals: Properties, Characterization and Applications
- Emerging Materials in Nanostrucutures (including Wide-bandgap Semiconductors, Oxides,
Ferromagnetics, Carbon-based, Polymer and Biomaterials)
- Nanostructures and Life Sciences
- Nanomechanical Systems and their Applications
The Symposium programme will comprise invited
talks and contributed papers. The latter should be earlier unpublished works
that either have been completed or are at their final stages. All contributions
will be refereed for technical merit and content by the International Programme Committee
on the basis of the extended abstracts submitted by the authors. Main criteria for
paper acceptance are originality, significance of presented results, quality
and completeness of the abstracts. The accepted papers will be assigned to either
oral or poster presentation at the discretion of the International Programme Committee.
Plenary, invited and contributed talks will be presented in a single-session
format at opening, closing and regular oral sessions. There will be a few
poster sessions.
Oral presentations will conform to a 40-minute, 30-minute and 20-minute
format (including 5 minutes for discussions) for plenary, invited and
contributed talks, respectively.
Each poster presenter will be provided
with a 1x1 m2 board.
Symposium Programme Committee and the Board of AIXTRON AG (Germany)
established a special award to honour a young scientist who will present at
the Symposium the best paper in the field of solid state nanostructures.
The award consists of a diploma and a $1,000 reward sponsored by AIXTRON AG.
The recipients of this Award are:

Committee will announce the winner at the Award Ceremony scheduled for the
last day of the Symposium.
Selection Criteria and Conditions of Entry
The competition will be opened to scientists
under the age of thirty-five from all over the world. In case of many
authors
papers the principal author will be considered as an applicant for the award
on behalf of others.
In addition to an extended abstract an applicant should also submit a separate sheet with complete
information about the applicant: name; birthday; Ph.D. degree, if any; postal
address; e-mail and fax number, to the Organizing Committee.
The main selection criterion will be the
best demonstration of scientific achievements in the field of physics and technology
of solid state nanostructures.
A number of distinguished scientists from all over the world have been
invited to present talks on recent progress in various key areas of nanostructure
physics and technology. While the invitation process is still in progress, a
list of speakers who have accepted the invitation will be timely updated.
